San Lucas Island has held a fascination for people for many years.
Your tour to San Lucas starts at 7.00 am, when the bus departs from the Holiday Inn, in downtown San Jose. Please note that the bus leaves promptly, you should be ready at least 10 minutes earlier. On arival in Puntarenas we board the beautiful motor yacht Paradise for the journey across the gulf of Nocoya to the island. The journey takes less than an hour during which we will serve soft drinks, coffee, and fresh fruit. On arrival on the island you will go on a tour of the old prison buildings, and our experienced (and bi-lingual) guides will explain some of the history and point out areas of interest. Parents with young children will be relieved to know that we know which cells contain the more graphic imagesand we can easilly avoid these when appropriate.
The indigenous people used the island as a burial place from around 1,500-800 BC., and jade, gold stone and clay pieces have been discovered.
The island continues to fascinate, it is a remote and tranquil island, but there are many poignent reminders of the brutal past when the island operated as a prison modelled on Devil's Island.
It is one of only 2 islands in the gulf of Nicoya with natural fresh water, and this has encouraged the bilogical diversity you can enjoy today.
There are a number of troops of Congo (Howler) monkeys, as well as deer, racoons, anteaters and other mammals. There are a number of bats, at least 8 different species, many of which live in or close to the old prison buildings.
Now you can visit the island and see for yourself the great beauty and the great sadness of this wonderful island
